The pricing tab of the LaterPay WordPress plugin is where you will spend the majority of your time and it is important to get this set up right. The aim of this guide is to provide a quick introduction to the pricing options available. Once you’re familiar with the features, we will dive in to a few best practices to make sure that you get started on the right foot.

There are several ways that you can monetize content using LaterPay on your WordPress site:

- Sell individual pieces of content (typically WordPress Posts)
- Sell time passes to your site
- Sell subscriptions to your site
In this article we will walk you through getting these different strategies set up on your site using the LaterPay WordPress plugin so let’s jump right in!
STEP 1: SELECT YOUR DEFAULT SETUP
The first step in setting up your LaterPay WordPress Plugin pricing is to determine how you would like your site to behave by default. We will spend quite a bit of time on this section but know that once you have it set up, you should not need to modify these settings in the future.
Once you have installed the plugin, navigate to the LaterPay > Pricing tab. You will see an area entitled “LaterPay Content” - this is where you select what types of WordPress content you would like to sell using LaterPay. The most common types are Pages, Posts, and Media but additional options may be available depending on the other plugins that you have installed.
TIP: If you are not sure what kind of content you would like to sell, we recommend starting with Posts & Media. This should ensure that your Pages (typically your Home Page, About Us Page, etc) remain free while you can monetize the majority of your other content (typically Posts).
Global Default Price
Once you have selected the content you would like to sell and clicked “Save,” you are ready to move on to setting the “Global Default Price.” This will determine the standard behavior of your monetized content. There are three options to choose from and we will go through each one in detail and provide a few examples to help determine which is the best option based on your strategy:
- FREE unless price is set on post page or by category
Description: All articles will be free by default. Time Passes & Subscriptions will only be displayed if the article matches a Category Default Price or has an Individual Article Price set on the Post Page.
What does that mean? We are getting a bit ahead of ourselves here but to simplify, this means that your content will be completely free (no single purchases, no time passes, no subscriptions) unless you intentionally override this setting.
Example: Assuming you are a news site and you want most of your articles to be free except for your content flagged as “Premium,” then this option is perfect for you. Make articles free by default and then we will walk you through how to override that for your premium content later on in this tutorial.
- Posts cannot be purchased individually
Description: Only Time Passes & Subscriptions will be displayed in the purchase dialog.
What does that mean? This means that you do not want to allow your users to purchase just one piece of content, instead you only want to allow them to access content using a time pass or subscription.
Example: If you are a music streaming service and you don’t want users to be able to purchase one song at a time, but instead you want to sell subscriptions, then this option is best suited for you. By selecting this, you will ensure that only time passes or subscriptions are displayed on your site.
- Set individual article default price
Description: All single pieces of content will be for sale at this price unless overridden.
What does that mean? This is the most standard of the three options; it is what you would typically think of when you are setting a “default.” By setting a price on this option, you are setting that as the default price for purchasing any single piece of content.
Example: I am a blogger, all of my content is along the same topic and ideally of equal interest (and value) to my readers. Therefore, I would like to set one default price for all of my blog posts. By selecting this option, I will do exactly that; set one price for all blog posts. Later I can override this for different categories or for specific posts but by default all of my blog posts will have the same price.
STEP 2: SET UP YOUR CATEGORIES
The LaterPay WordPress plugin is designed to work with WordPress Categories. By using Categories, you can easily set one price for large sections of content. Here is an example of how Categories can be used to set your site up quickly and easily:
Assume I am a local news site, I have sections of my site for the weather, sports, politics, and human interest stories. Each of these already have their own categories set up. I also have a “Breaking News” category for high value stories like local election results. Here is a rough outline of how I would like to set up my pricing:
- Weather = free
- Sports = 0.29 per article
- Politics = 0.49 per article
- Human Interest = 0.49 per article
- Breaking News = 2.99 per article or 9.99 week time pass
- I also want a Subscription which will grant access to my entire site for 14.99 per month
Since I have some content that I want to be completely free (Weather) I want my Global Default Price (which we discussed above) to be set to “FREE unless price is set on post page or by category.” Now all I have to do is set up pricing for the rest of my Categories.
First I recommend thinking through how you would like to charge for your content as we did above. I find looking at this in a table helpful:
Politics & Human Interest
9.99 for one week
All Else (default)
Now we can easily see an overview of our pricing strategy and are ready to get started.
- Category Default Prices
- Click “ + Create” to add a Category Single Purchase Price
- For the examples above we will add:
- One category price for 0.29 for Sports
- One for 2.99 for Breaking News
- And, since we can select multiple categories at once, we can combine Politics & Human Interest for 0.49 per article
- Time Passes
We only want one time pass which should provide access to all Breaking News stories for one week
- Once again we click “+ Create” to add a time pass
- Select the time frame of 1 week
- Choose that it should grant access to “All content in category” and select Breaking News
- Then we set up our pricing, title, and description
Last but not least, in this example we want a subscription that provides access to the entire site
- We click “+ Create” next to the Subscription heading
- Adjust the price
- Leave the access to setting set to “All content”
- Configure the time frame, title, and description
It is that simple! As you get more comfortable with the plugin and with different monetization strategies, you will no longer need to spend the time mapping your strategy into a table but we have found that this is a great way to get started.

Exceptions & Advanced Monetization Strategies
If there is anything we all know, it is that life is not black and white and at times exceptions need to be made. Here are a few additional pricing options to ensure you are prepared for any scenario:
While we highly recommend setting up your pricing using Categories on the Pricing tab, if you ever need to override a price for a specific article, you may do so on the WordPress Edit Post page. To do this simply:
- Navigate to the post you would like to override
- Choose to Edit that post using the WordPress Admin
- In the right sidebar you should see a LaterPay section where you can select to use the Global Default Price, a Category Default Price (when applicable), or to set an Individual Price.
By selecting the Individual Price, you will be able to override any other defaults for this specific post.
Voucher codes can be generated for time passes and subscriptions. Vouchers are most commonly used to give discounted access to readers who already have a print subscription. To create a voucher code, simply click “+ Generate Voucher Code” at the bottom of the time pass or subscription box. A random 6 character code will be generated but this can be overridden with a custom 6 characters if you choose. Then simply set the reduced price, add a description and save!
A few key things to note when using voucher codes:
- Each voucher can be redeemed an unlimited number of times
- If a new user signs up for a subscription using a voucher code, the voucher code will reduce the price for the entirety of the subscription
For example, if you have a monthly subscription regularly priced at 10 per month and generate a voucher code which makes that subscription available for 5 per month, anyone who signs up for that subscription using the voucher code will pay 5 every month
Add Dynamic Pricing
Dynamic pricing is a feature available on the Edit Post page. Once there, simply choose “Individual Price” in the Pricing for this Post section then click “+ Add dynamic pricing” at the bottom. Once you’ve completed this, you can drag and drop the points on the graph to adjust pricing based on the days since the article was originally published.
Create a Subscription Landing Page
With this shortcode, you can create a button to promote a Subscription or Time Pass anywhere on your site. The button background color, font color, and text can be easily customized or you can upload an image to use for the button.
Sell Downloadable Content (PDFs, Media, etc)
Using a custom shortcode, you can easily charge for downloadable content (such as PDFs). This short code allows you to customize the content, heading, description, and background image.
Ask for Contributions
Using the LaterPay Button Generator, in just a couple of minutes you can create a custom contributions button that can be used on your website, in email, or social media posts.
Try to set up your pricing as much as possible on the Pricing tab
The Individual Article Price on the Edit Post Page should be used for overrides only. This will help make your site easier to maintain in the long run. Imagine all of the posts you will have five years from now! If you set each one individually, it will get very difficult to keep track of each price and would also be very time consuming if you need to make changes.
Use categories to apply pricing to large sections of your site
Categories are the quickest, easiest, and most easily customizable way to set up pricing with your LaterPay WordPress plugin. We also highly recommend this method for long-term maintenance. By using Categories, you are able to easily set and adjust prices for large sections of similar content.
Check the pricing on the WordPress “All Posts Page”
If you get into a situation where you are unsure about your pricing, try taking a look at the WordPress All Posts Page. Here you can see each individual post along with a column for the price and how that price is assigned. This will let you easily determine where the price is coming from in case you need to make changes.
